Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy - Bay Tree ClinicThe use of Aromatherapy is linked to the development of medicine and in this way the history dates back to many early civilizations. Most evidence of widespread use comes from ancient Egypt where the doctors of the time, known as priests, extensively used essential oils. Aromatherapy combines the therapeutic powers of essential oils, which are used in a relaxing, restorative massage; combining the sense of smell with the healing value of touch so promoting emotional well-being.

How does it work?

Essential oils enter and affect the mind and body by two main routes into the body. Through inhalation the molecules in the aromas send an immediate signal to the limbic system of the brain the centre of memory and emotions where it can produce a powerful effect on mood to bring about a general feeling of wellbeing. These tiny molecules of essential oils are absorbed by the membranes of the lungs; massage increases the absorption through the skin via pores, hair follicles and the skin surface. The chemical constituents of all oils are carried in the bloodstream to all areas of the body. These can react in a similar way to orthodox drugs.

The Treatment

The chosen oils will be blended specifically for your needs. Essential oils are very concentrated so they will be diluted with vegetable-based oil. During the massage the aromatherapist will massage the blend into your body as agreed with you.Either using a full body massage or massage of particular areas as agreed with you while you lie on a therapy couch. The practitioner may also suggest ways in which you may like to use aromatherapy at home to enhance the treatment. Such as in the bath, oil burner and creams and/or lotions and recommend which oils to use for your present condition.
