Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage at Bay Tree ClinicSwedish massage was founded in the early 19th century by Per Henrik Ling. Most of today’s western massage is based on the work of this Scandinavian practitioner.

How does it work

The main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and help release toxins from the muscles. Recovery time from muscular strain is shortened by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic waste. It can assist with a wide range of either physical and psychological conditions, or where ever there is muscular tension in the body. Common aches, pains, neck, shoulder tension and back ache can all be soothed by a massage. The relaxing effect helps to improve the flow of lymph, enhancing the functioning of the body’s immune system. Massage will help to improve circulation, relieving conditions attributed to poor circulation.Stress, both emotional and physical, anxiety, insomnia, headaches and migraines can all be alleviated. Digestive problems such as constipation and excessive gas can be relieved with an abdominal massage. Menstrual pain can be eased and soothed.

The treatment

A variety of techniques are used, specifically designed to relax muscles, by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood to the heart. The patient lies on the couch usually face down for half the session and face up the other. The practitioner will generally work on most parts of the body, using massage techniques to include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage and shaking movements. The intensity of massage can vary and the practitioner should check that you are happy with the pressure.
